Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology that allows two devices (typically a smartphone and an NFC tag) to communicate when brought within a few centimeters of each other. NFC chips are passive; they don't require their own power source. When a smartphone (the active device) comes close, it powers the NFC chip, which then transmits a small amount of data (usually a URL or a unique identifier). This "tap-to-connect" functionality is what makes NFC-enabled collectibles so intuitive and powerful.
