For replicated CDs (Module 57), a similar bottleneck exists with the "glass master." Your digital audio master is written onto a highly polished glass disc, which then undergoes an electroforming process to create a metal "stamper." This stamper is what imprints the data pits onto each polycarbonate CD during injection molding. The creation of this initial glass master and subsequent stamper is another high, fixed upfront cost that is essential for mass replication.
